A&M-Corpus Christi Heads West to Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Taking its second road trip of the season all the way west, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will face Santa Clara at 8 p.m. CT Tuesday in the Leavey Center.
 
The Islanders (2-2) will spend its Thanksgiving break on the pacific coast instead of the gulf coast to take on Santa Clara (4-1) for the first time in program history. A&M-Corpus Christi will also be looking for its first road win of the season.
 
The Islanders are coming off a tough overtime loss to UTSA 66-59 at home. They led through three quarters before the Roadrunners carried a fourth quarter surge into overtime for the win. A&M-Corpus Christi outshot UTSA .392 to .375, however, the Roadrunners edged out the Islanders 48-33 in rebounds to help them convert seven more points off the second chance, the difference in the game.
 
Graduate Alecia Westbrook led the team with 17 points for her second straight double figure scoring game of the season. She is already leading the conference in rebounding for the third year in a row, averaging 7.8 rpg.
 
Seniors Paige Allen and Mireia Aguado also scored in double figures against UTSA. It was Aguado's third double digit scoring game of the year and her 14 points matched her career best. Prior to this season, she had only scored 10+ points in a game two other times in her career. Westbrook and Aguado are both averaging over 10 points a game with 11.3 and 10.8, respectively. 
 
Junior Nabaweeyah McGill blocked the Roadrunners four times and now sits atop the conference standings with 1.8 blocks per game while freshman Torie Sevier comes in at second averaging 1.3 bpg. Sevier is also second in field goal percentage (.643) and for her perfect free throw percentage.
 
As a team, the Islanders lead the SLC in opponent FG percentage (.342), opponent 3FG percentage (.231), combined team rebounds (42.5 rpg), turnover margin (9.00), and assist:turnover ratio (1.26). They are second in scoring margin (15.0), assists (15.75 apg), and steals (12.00 spg).
 
Santa Clara has won its last three straight, including back-to-back 30+ wins over CSUN (71-39) and Oregon (89-50). They are led by leading scorer Tess Heal who is averaging 18.2 ppg on 47.7-percent shooting from the field and is adding a team-high 4.0 assists per game.

NOTES
- The Islanders are 2-0 all-time against current West Coast Conference schools with wins over University of the Pacific in 2021 (81-61) and University of Portland 2003 (64-63). Both wins came in the month of November.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has scored at least 50 points in every game so far this season. It is the first time since the 2021-22 season when the Islanders scored at least 50 points in the first four games of the season after they scored at least 50 in the first eight games.
 
- Both of A&M-Corpus Christi's victories this year have been won by at least 38 points this season. The 52-point win against Schreiner marked the biggest margin of victory this year, and largest since last season against St. Thomas when the Islanders posted an 80-23 (+57) win.
 
- Westbrook has broken the program records for career free throws made, career free throws attempted, career defensive rebounds, and career double-doubles last year alone and is chasing the program's career record of total rebounds, total points, and minutes played.
 
- Sevier is off to a prominent start in her freshman campaign, scoring in double figures in two of the three games she has played in this year including in the season opener as her collegiate debut.
