Women's Basketball Stays Home for UTSA Wednesday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off its second home win of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will look to keep the home court advantage strong when it hosts UTSA Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders (2-1) have opened their jam-packed home slate with some flare, taking down St. Thomas 79-41 in the season opener while crushing Schreiner 92-40 just last night. It was the team's first 90+ point win since Dec. 8, 2021, when the Islanders posted the exact same score (92-40) to beat St. Edward's.

All 14 players on the roster saw time on the court for the third game in a row. It has helped the Islanders outscore every team in bench points, including at Texas A&M. Four Islanders have scored at least 10 points in both home games this year.

Graduate Alecia Westbrook turned in a game-high 16 points against Schreiner as freshman Torie Sevier, senior Sasha Shishkina, and junior Maya Ellis joined her in double figures. It marked Shishkina's first career double digit scoring game.

Sevier is off to a prominent start in her college career, logging double digits in two of the three games so far including in the season opener which marked her collegiate debut. She currently ranks third overall in the conference in blocked shots (1.3 bpg) after denying Schreiner four times, as well as ranking fourth in field goal percentage (.643).

The trio of junior Tymberlin Criswell and seniors Violeta Verano and Mireia Aguado are all averaging 2.7 steals per game to tie for fourth in the league and help the Islanders lead it as a team with 13.33 steals per game. In addition, the Islanders lead the SLC in turnover margin (11.00) and assist/turnover ratio (1.55).

Aguado is leading the team in scoring with 9.7 ppg while Westbrook trails right behind her at 9.3 ppg. Verano, who has led the team in assists every year she has played with the Islanders, records a team-high 10 assists on the season.

UTSA (1-1) is coming off a tight 58-55 winner over New Mexico State last week for their first win of the season. They were aided by the 19-point performance from freshman Aysia Proctor who went 8for-9 from the field. She and senior Kyra White share the title for leading scorer at 10.5 ppg each.

It will be the 18th meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA with the latter holding a 12-5 advantage in the all-time record.

The game will be available to watch live with a subscription to ESPN+. Doug Kesterson will be on the call.
