Islanders Explode in Dominate 92-40 Win over Schreiner

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Posting its first 90+ scoring game since 2021, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team got it done on both ends of the court to go on to a 92-40 victory Monday night in the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders (2-1) held just a 15-point lead at the half before propelling forward in the second half to finish 52 points ahead of Schreiner (0-2). It included 55.5 percent field goal shooting in the final 10 minutes by the Islanders to outscore the Mountaineers 32-5 in the fourth.

A&M-Corpus Christi turned in other large advantages against Schreiner, including 56-16 in the paint, 45-4 in points off turnovers, 28-2 in second chance points, and 53-23 in bench points.

Four Islanders came away in double figures, including graduate Alecia Westbrook who led the game with 16 points. She added nine boards to near a double-double. Freshman Torie Sevier scored 10+ points for already the second time in her freshman campaign, notching 13 points after going 4-for-5 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. She also blocked Schreiner four times.

Senior Sasha Shishkina recorded 11 points while junior Maya Ellis registered 10.

The Mountaineers outshot the Islanders 27.8 to 18.5 from distance, with Tamia Moody and Nariyah Buggs both nailing a pair of threes to finish as co-leaders in scoring for the team with eight points each.

Senior Violeta Verano got out quick to score off the tip for the fastbreak lay-in. Junior Nabaweeyah McGill then ran the court to complete her rebound with an inside shot for an early 4-0 lead. Schreiner didn't respond until nearly two minutes into the game but got back within one (7-6) at the 6:35 mark. Back-to-back buckets by junior Annukka Willstedt extended the Islanders back ahead 13-6 and they kept pushing to close out the first quarter up 24-10.

The steal by senior Paige Allen resulted in a fastbreak bucket by Ellis as the Islanders went up 28-10 in the second. Senior Mireia Aguado drew the and-one to get A&M-Corpus Christi ahead by 20 but a couple of threes helped Schreiner get back within 15 as the teams headed to the break with the Islanders up 40-25.

Westbrook drew the foul coming out of the half to complete the three-point play before McGill laid it in at the 8:59 mark as the Islanders led by 20 again 45-25. Though, it wouldn't be until the three pointer by Willstedt solidified by the long range goal by Verano that the Islanders never saw a lead under 20 again. Another missile from downtown came from Ellis as the Islanders led it 60-32 with 1:05 on the clock, but Schreiner responded with a three of their own to conclude the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Islanders as the Mountaineers couldn't bucket anymore than five points. Junior Tymberlin Criswell and Sevier put in work in the final 10 minutes, as both scored all of their points in the fourth. They combined for 22 of the team's 32 points scored in the quarter.

The Islanders are now 2-0 at home this year and will look to extend that to three straight when they host UTSA on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
