CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Going up against the first-place team in the Southland Conference standings, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program dropped a 1-0 decision Friday to Lamar at Dugan Stadium.
The lone tally came in the 21st minute by Hollie Massey. A&M-Corpus Christi regrouped at halftime and nearly found an equalizer but the Cardinals were able to hold on to its one-goal margin.
"We struggled a little bit to connect passes in the first half, didn't really play our game and got overrun by the occasion. But in the second half, we really settled down. We started passing, started moving the ball, switching, creating chances and I'm very, very happy with how we finished the game. We just couldn't get that tying goal," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
The Islanders tallied a 3-0 edge in corner kicks in the second half. Their best opportunity came off a corner kick in the 77th minute when junior
Emma Crump headed a shot into the post on the left side and a second shot off a rebound went wide.
A&M-Corpus Christi recorded five shots in the game. It included two by Crump and one by graduate
Olivia Hughes, sophomore
Mai-Lisa Atis and freshman
Ashley Wilson. Crump played all 90 minutes at center back, while Hughes logged 86 and Atis 80.
Junior
Zoe Theriot made her third consecutive start in net and registered a season-high 10 saves.
A&M-Corpus Christi sits in fourth-place in the SLC standings with a 4-4-1 record. A victory in the regular season finale Sunday against McNeese at 1 p.m. would give the program its second-ever winning season in conference and the first since 2019.
Sunday will also be Senior Day. Prior to the match, the Islanders will have a special pregame Senior Day ceremony for
Molly Arens,
Reese Cross,
Emma Herrera,
Emily Levy,
Maggie Murray,
Jayden Rea and
Kennedy Stelling.
