COMMERCE, Texas – Handing Texas A&M-Commerce its first conference loss of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program registered a goal from graduate
Olivia Hughes in the 87th minute to tally a 2-1 victory Friday at the Lion Soccer Field.
It was the third consecutive win for the Islanders, who've allowed just one goal during that span. A&M-Corpus Christi improved its conference record to 4-2-1 on the year, while A&M-Commerce dropped to 5-1.
The game-winning goal came off a corner kick. Senior
Maggie Murray sent a ball into the six-yard box that bounced around and was cleaned up by Hughes with the left foot into the lower left corner. It was her third goal of the season.
The first goal was scored in the 33rd minute by senior
Molly Arens. It came after freshman
Ashley Wilson fired a ball off the crossbar from outside the box that was rebounded by Arens with a header into an empty net. It was Arens' second straight game with a goal after she lasered a free kick into the net against Nicholls last weekend.
"Wow! This team! The first half was the best soccer we've ever played, and the second half was the best fight I've ever seen," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "So proud."
A big night came from junior goalkeeper
Zoe Theriot as she recorded eight saves. Theriot improved her record to 4-1 on the year.
The Lions scored in the 72nd minute for the equalizer by Kaydence Ramirez. The game remained even for the next 15 minutes before Hughes' goal.
A&M-Corpus Christi was without junior
Rachel Loetzer, the reigning Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week winner, as she was one of many out due to injury. The shorthanded Islanders saw five starters play 90 minutes.
The Islanders will finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. start against Northwestern State on Sunday at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex. It will be the final road game of the season. A&M-Corpus Christi will host the Southland Conference Championship on Nov. 1-5 at Dugan Stadium.
