A&M-Corpus Christi Goes for Sweep over UIW

SAN ANTONIO – Trying to beat the same team twice in a week, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program will travel for a 4 p.m. rematch at UIW on Saturday at the McDermott Center.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (9-6, 2-0 SLC) will take on UIW (6-9, 0-2 SLC) again after playing Wednesday in the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders won 91-61 which was the third-largest conference victory in program history. A&M-Corpus Christi is 12-6 all-time against UIW, 5-4 on the road and 3-0 under head coach Steve Lutz.
 
The Islanders are 2-0 in conference for the second year in a row. They opened SLC play with a 65-59 road win at Northwestern State last weekend. A&M-Corpus Christi has not started 3-0 since 2015-16 when it began 7-0 and finished 15-3.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi has four student-athletes averaging in double-figures. Senior Isaac Mushila nearly averages a double-double with 14.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Senior Trevian Tennyson scores 12.1 points per game, senior Terrion Murdix 11.5 and graduate Ross Williams 10.6.
 
Murdix ranks first in the SLC in both assists (4.2 apg) and assist:turnover ratio (2.6). He's also second in steals (2.2). Murdix is averaging 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game in conference.
 
Mushila is averaging a double-double in conference with team-highs of 18.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per outing.
 
Over the last five games, Williams is 15-for-30 (.500) from three-point range. He's second in the league in 3FG% (.438) and third in 3FGM per game (2.8).
 
The Cardinals are looking for their first conference win but are 4-1 at home this year. Jonathan Cisse leads the team with 13.8 points per game and netted 22 against the Islanders on Wednesday. Cisse ranks 23rd in the nation in free throw percentage with a .902 mark.

NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi has the highest NET Ranking in the Southland Conference at 181 out of 363 Division I schools. The Islanders are the only team in the league in the top-200.
 
- It's the second year in a row the Islanders are playing a team in back-to-back games after doing so against New Orleans last season. Prior to last year, A&M-Corpus Christi hadn't gone back-to-back against the same opponent since beating UT Arlington consecutively in 2008-09.
 
- The Islanders rank 16th in the nation in bench scoring (30.7 ppg), 17th in steals per game (9.8), 18th in free throw percentage (.771) and 21st in turnovers forced per game (17.4). Individually, Mushila is 18th in offensive rebounds (9.6 orpg) and 22nd in double-doubles (6), while Williams is 30th in 3FG% (.438).
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is 147-124 all-time in the Southland Conference since joining the league in 2006-07.
 
- In two seasons under Lutz, the Islanders are 13-0 when they shoot over 50 percent from the field and 22-1 when the opposition scores below 70 points. This season, the team is 6-0 when they shoot above 33 percent from three-point range.
 
- The Islanders rank first in the Southland Conference in scoring defense (71.5 ppg), free throw percentage (.771), rebounding (36.9 ppg), rebounding margin (+1.5), assists (15.9 apg) and assist:turnover ratio (1.2).
