A&M-Corpus Christi Soars Above Cardinals in 91-61 Thumping

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In the third-largest conference win in school history, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program posted a lopsided 91-61 victory over UIW on Wednesday in front of a sold out crowd at the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
It was largest SLC win since March 7, 2015 when A&M-Corpus Christi (9-6, 2-0 SLC) beat Abilene Christian 58-27. The school record for the largest conference win came on Jan. 18, 2007 when it topped Texas State 90-42.
 
The Islanders remained undefeated at home this year with a 7-0 record and every win has been by double-figures. The program is now 217-106 all-time at home.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi shot a season-high .583 (35-60) from the field. It garnered four double-figure scorers including senior Isaac Mushila who registered 20 points and eight rebounds and was 8-of-10 from the field.
 
A perfect shooting night came from senior Terrion Murdix who was 7-for-7 from the floor. He tallied 16 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals.
 
With 12 points apiece were graduate Ross Williams and senior Trevian Tennyson. Williams was 4-of-7 from three-point range and Tennyson was 4-of-6. They helped the Islanders shot .400 (10-25) from beyond-the-arc as a team.
 
Freshman Owen Dease came off the bench to set his career-high at eight points. Sophomore Jordan Roberts aided the attack with seven points. A&M-Corpus Christi outscored UIW (6-9, 0-2 SLC) 39-20 off the bench.
 
The Islanders shot .917 (11-12) from the charity stripe. Mushila was a perfect 4-of-4.
 
UIW was led by Jonathan Cisse who scored a game-high 22 points in over 39 minutes.
 
The Cardinals led 8-5 early and were still in front 13-12 at the 10:04 mark of the first half. A jumper by Murdix and a three by Williams put the Islanders ahead 17-13 with 9:25 left.
 
Still up 17-15, A&M-Corpus Christi went on a 10-0 run to create separation as a free throw by junior Jasman Sangha made it 27-15 with 5:16 remaining. The largest lead of the half, 35-17, came on a lay-up by Mushila with 3:29 to go, but UIW was able to get the deficit down to 39-26 at the break.
 
The Islanders were up 58-45 midway through the second half when they put the game away with a 15-0 run. It started with a jumper by Dease and was capped by a basket by Mushila to catapult ahead 73-45 with 6:03 left.
 
The largest lead of the night was 87-55 after a three by Grandberry with 2:27 remaining.
 
It was the final game at the Dugan Wellness Center this season. Up next, the Islanders will rematch the Cardinals on Saturday when they travel to San Antonio for a 4 p.m. tip.
 
NOTES
- It was the second 30-plus win over a Division I institution this year after beating Alcorn State 98-67 on Nov. 23. The last time the Islanders posted multiple 30-point wins over Division I schools in the same season was 2005-06 when they beat Savannah State 90-45, James Madison 93-52 and Northern Colorado 99-56.
 
- The Islanders are now 12-6 all-time against UIW and 7-2 at home. A&M-Corpus Christi is 3-0 against the Cardinals under Lutz after sweeping the season series last year 80-64 at home and 77-68 on the road.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 147-124 all-time in the Southland Conference since joining the league in 2006-07.
 
- In two seasons under Lutz, the Islanders are now 13-0 when they shoot over 50 percent from the field and 22-1 when the opposition scores below 70 points. This season, the team is 6-0 when they shoot above 33 percent from three-point range.
 
- The Islanders entered the game ranked first in the Southland Conference in free throw percentage (.764), defensive rebounding (25.1 drpg) and assist:turnover ratio (1.2). They will improve on all those categories with a .917 free throw percentage, 26 defensive rebounds, 24 assists and 11 turnovers.
 
- Mushila submitted his 10th career 20-plus scoring game and fifth this year. It was also his 33rd career double-figure scoring outing and ninth this year. He was coming off a 16-point, 13-rebound performance at Northwestern State.
 
- Murdix notched his 25th career double-figure scoring game and eighth this season. His eight assists were a season-high. Murdix was coming off a 19-point, 9-rebound affair against Northwestern State. His 7-for-7 night was one shy of the school record for highest field goal percentage as Kerry Richardson was 8-for-8 at Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 10, 2021.
 
- Tennyson turned in his 30th career double-digit scoring game and 10th this year. He was coming off a 15-point game at Northwestern State. It was the fourth time this season that he's made four three-points in a game.
 
- Williams recorded his seventh double-figure scoring game of the season. It was the fifth time he's made at least four threes in a game. Over the last five games, Williams is 15-of-30 (.500) from long distance.
