CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Coming off its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program released its 2023 schedule that features eight tournaments, two of which will be hosted by the Islanders.
"Based on my experience working with this talented group of players, I expect that we will have a lot of success this season," said head coach Gayle Stammer. "We have an exciting schedule, in great locations, against some of the best teams in the country."
The season will begin on Feb. 24 when the team travels to Houston for the Third Coast College Classic, hosted by Southland rival HCU. The Islanders will face the Huskies, along with UAB, Central Arkansas and TCU.
Heading to Florida next, A&M-Corpus Christi will play at Florida International before competing in the Florida Atlantic March Invitational on March 3.
This year will also feature a Southland Conference Mid-Season Tournament on March 11-12, hosted by HCU. The tournament schedule is to be announced, but will feature all competing beach volleyball programs in the league including newcomers Boise State and San Jose State.
The 2023 Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic is set for March 31 as A&M-Corpus Christi's home opener. The tournament will be held at Water's Edge Park as the Islanders will play host to Stephen F. Austin, HCU, and Texas A&M-Kingsville over the weekend.
Following a competitive tournament at TCU, the reigning conference victors will then host the 2023 Southland Conference Championships at Water's Edge Park from April 21-23.Â
"It's amazing to host our home tournament and the Southland Beach Volleyball Championships again, in downtown Corpus Christi at Water's Edge Park. We are so excited about opening weekend in Houston, but for now we will continue to focus on team and individual development," Stammer said.
The Islanders are coming off a 21-13 season including going 11-0 against SLC opponents to lead them to the 2022 Southland Tournament Championship and earning their first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
