Islanders Head to Prairie View A&M for First Matches of Spring 2023

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The 2023 season gets underway Thursday for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs when they open the year against Prairie View A&M in doubleheaders beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Both the men and women are coming off championship seasons as the men won the 2022 Southland Conference regular season title and the women won the SLC Tournament championship. The two programs have combined for five championships over the last three seasons.

The men brought back four starters including their No. 1, 2 and 3 singles players from last year. Seniors Pascal Lorieul and Nathan Schwartz have won three championships including a pair of regular season titles and the conference tournament in 2021.

The women returned three starters including 2022 SLC Player of the Year Emma Aucagne. Senior Victoire Delattre, junior Kateryna Rublevska and Aucagne have guided A&M-Corpus Christi to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

"These high character Islanders are incredibly excited to start the season. They are working incredibly hard and came back in great shape. I love the leadership and heart of this team. This team loves being together, the travel and the journey. Every season is really like the same movie, there's adversity, disappointments and injuries, but you just have to keep choosing to stick together and choose the character road. I believe deeply the team is committed to that," said head coach Steve Moore.

A&M-Corpus Christi has one of the winningest programs in the history of the Southland Conference for any sport. The men have won 21 titles including the regular season the last two years and the tournament in 2021, while the women have won nine titles and have made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.

Men's tennis has reached the NCAA Tournament nine times and the women five including back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. Both teams reached the top-90 nationally last year out of 316 Division I schools, and it was the third consecutive year the women cracked the top-85.

The PVAMU women made it to the finals of the SWAC Tournament last year. The Islanders are 33-0 all-time against the women and 36-0 against the men.
