CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - In dominating fashion, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program defeated New Orleans 97-79 at the American Bank Center Saturday evening.
The Islanders broke the school record for three-point field goals made in a single game with 16, shooting 66.7% on the night. Prior to tonight, the program had made 14 on four separate occasions with the best three-point field goal percentage sitting at .750, set in 2013.
A&M-Corpus Christi (11-7, 4-1 SLC) and New Orleans (6-10, 3-2 SLC) battled for the lead early on as the two teams were neck-and-neck, tied at nine apiece 4:20 into the game. The Islanders took a 25-22 lead with 7:54 left to play in the first half off a three-pointer by senior
Trevian Tennyson the team never relinquished.
With just over five and a half minutes left to play in the first half, A&M-Corpus Christi went on an 11-0 run spanning just over two minutes. By halftime, the Islanders had created a 16-point difference, leading the Privateers 49-33.
The Islanders struck early in the second half, just 13 seconds in, to earn a 51-33 lead as New Orleans looked to strike back. Holding on to a healthy lead, A&M-Corpus Christi worked its way to a 24-point lead with 11:47 left in the game as senior
Simeon Fryer scored off of a turnover.
The team reached the 24-point differential thrice, all in the second half. The final score gave A&M-Corpus Christi an 18-point victory to earn its fourth win in conference play.
Tennyson led the team in scoring with 28 points in a career-high performance. He dropped in 10 of his 16 shots taken while earning three rebounds in the process. Starting off the game hot, he earned the first seven points for the team.
Senior
Jalen Jackson paved the way in assists with six on the night, reaching eight points and four rebounds. Classmate
Isaac Mushila fought his way to 17 points in the performance, pulling down a team-leading 12 rebounds.
A&M-Corpus Christi out-rebounded the Privateers 39-28 with 17 offensive rebounds and 22 coming defensively. The Islanders also fought to edge out UNO in steals, taking the ball 11 times compared to five.
The Privateers were led by guard Jordan Johnson at 17 points in the performance with teammate Khaleb Wilson-Rouse reaching 16 total points.
A&M-Corpus Christi hits the road on Thursday to take on Lamar at 7:00 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
