CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's women's soccer program walked away with a 2-1 victory over HBU Friday night at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium in a monumental victory.
"I'm super proud of the ladies," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "We're going to take our recovery session seriously tomorrow and prepare for a battle on Sunday."
The win over the Huskies marked the first time the Islanders have outscored HBU for a victory. The first goal of the night came off sophomore
Morgan Westbury when presented with a penalty kick. Coming into the game, she was tied for first in the nation in the category, separating herself from the pack in the matchup.
Junior
Molly Arens later scored the go-ahead goal to give A&M-Corpus Christi the 2-1 advantage at the 84:05 mark. Before the goal, HBU had tied the game up at one apiece 60:50 into the game to keep it close.
"It was a rush and I was happy to help my team out," said Arens. She went on to credit teammate
Storm Harris, a sophomore, by saying, "She did all the work and had really nice pacssing. I'm happy to get the win for the team."
The defensive effort was led by sophomore
Emma Crump and junior
Emma Herrera who both played above 80 minutes on the night, helping A&M-Corpus Christi to hold HBU to only one goal. Goalkeeper
Kennedy Stelling, a junior, played all 90 minutes in the net for the Islanders, accumulating five saves in the effort.
Both teams combined for 23 shots on the night with A&M-Corpus Christi compiling 10 of those with four being on target. Arens led the path in shots along with redshirt-junior
Natalie Gonzalez at two apiece. Six fellow Islanders each had one shot on the night.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to the pitch Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on the road at UIW with a day of rest until then.
