Golf Moves Up after Strong Final Round of Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Saving its best for the final round, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program posted its best score of the tournament Tuesday with a 291 to finish in a tie for sixth at the Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet at Rivercut Golf Course.
 
The 291 came after A&M-Corpus Christi carded a 306 in round one and 302 in round two on Monday. The Islanders ended with an 899 overall, which was five strokes better than their 904 score at the Payne Stewart Meet last year.
 
"Today's round was much like we are capable of, moving up two spots to tie for sixth for the tournament," said head coach Pat Stephens. "Solid play from top to bottom."
 
Senior Maria Beltran paved the way by shooting under par with a -1 Tuesday, which was the best round by an Islander at the tournament. She finished the meet with a 223 to tie for 13th overall with freshman Lucia Ramirez, who turned in a +1 in the final round.
 
Also tallying her best round of the tournament Tuesday was junior Lucie Charbonnier. She notched a +1 and ended with a 230. Charbonnier was four strokes behind freshman Elsa Tornvall who recorded a 226.
 
Rounding it out was junior Reese Drezins who etched a 233 for the tournament.
 
"I feel this team is starting to understand what they are capable of. Our 291 third round total is one of lowest in program history. We have a solid week of practice ahead of us and then we'll will head to Sam Houston's tournament with a lot of confidence," Stephens said.
 
Up next, the Islanders will compete in Texas when they travel to Huntsville for the SHSU Bearkat Invitational on Sept. 26-27.
