Islanders Victorious in Season Opener at Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's women's soccer team earned a season-opening victory against Texas Southern at Durley Stadium after withstanding a two-hour lightning delay.

"It's great, especially given the adversity we had to endure," said head coach Craig Shaw about the victory. "It's almost midnight and we finished the game. Some teams could have had a bad attitude sitting around for two hours and we didn't. That's what I wanted to see from us."

Junior Molly Arens, a team captain, scored the first goal of the season with an assist by classmate Maggie Murray five minutes into the game to give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead. Morgan Westbury, a sophomore, scored a second time for A&M-Corpus Christi 30 minutes into the game, allowing the Islanders to hold a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Reese Cross, a junior, scored the final goal of the game with 26 minutes left in the second half in response to the lone goal scored by Texas Southern.

Westbury led the way in shots on goal with seven shots and one goal. Arens followed behind with four total shots. Three of the four were on goal which lead the team in that category. Cross took two shots on goal, as well as sophomore Rachel Loetzer rounded out the total shots on goal. The team combined for 21 shots and 11 corner kicks in the win.

A&M-Corpus Christi will take two days of rest before returning back in action against UTRGV for the South Texas Showdown on the road on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
