Islanders Hall of Honor Inductee John Jordan Wins $250,000 Ones Basketball League Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. – Outlasting 21 other finalists, John Jordan claimed the $250,000 winner-take-all first-place prize and the inaugural title of "Ruler of the Court" at the Ones Basketball League (OBL) finals.

The event, created by Basketball Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady, was played before more than 1,200 fans on Saturday at The Dollar Loan Center. Jordan, a Houston native, was the No. 2 seed in the one-on-one tournament.

"John Jordan is a great champion and the kind of player that the OBL is built for," said McGrady. "Our goal is to give these overlooked players a platform, and the way he and many others competed throughout the weekend should open plenty of eyes in the basketball world. We couldn't be happier for John and we loved the energy these players and the fans brought to the OBL all season long."

Jordan hit a fadaway shot in overtime to beat George Beamon in the finals. He qualified for the event after being crowned the Houston Champ with a 9-1 record in his region.

"I had to battle all tournament, with great opponents, especially George in the finals, and I'm proud to be the first OBL Champion," said Jordan. "It's not as much about the money to me, but the respect. I want to thank T-Mac and the OBL for this opportunity."

Jordan was inducted into the A&M-Corpus Christi Hall of Fame in 2022. He played for the Islanders from 2011-15. In the school record book, he ranks first all-time in assists (652), first in minutes played (4,340) and free throws made (559). Jordan finished his career as the only active player in Division I with more than 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists and is one of two players in Southland Conference history to ever accomplish that feat.

He went on to a successful professional career, first in the NBA G League where he helped Raptors 905 win a championship in 2017 under Head Coach Jerry Stackhouse. Jordan then transitioned to overseas professional basketball and has had stints in Finland, Belgium, Germany and Serbia. He is currently playing for Ploiesti CSM in the Romanian National League where he is averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists per game last season.
