Islanders Take on UTRGV in Season Rubber Match

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball and UTRGV will face off in a season-long rubber match at Chapman Field on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

"I'd love to snap my fingers and get a repeat of last Wednesday," said head coach Scott Malone. "We did a lot of little things well and our pitchers managed innings. They're a talented team with a lot of good bats in the lineup and we never let the game get away from us."

The Islanders and Vaqueros have split two games this season with the first being in Edinburg as the Vaqueros came out on top before A&M-Corpus Christi earned their revenge in a 12-5 win last week Wednesday at home. In the all-time series with their rivals, the Islanders have the advantage, sitting ahead of them with 48 wins compared to 45.

As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi has found a variety of successes on the field as they sit second in the nation and tied for first in the conference with the most triples this season at 21. Only one team sits ahead of them on the national stage, giving the Islanders an opportunity to take the lead in all of Division I baseball in the category. The team leads in doubles within the conference with 88, runs with 313, and slugging percentage at .444.

Individual success has appeared in batting and pitching, with junior Hayden Thomas leading the way at fifth in the nation in games started, having shown up on the mound at the beginning of games 12 times this season. A fellow junior in Leo Markotic sits fifth in the nation in sacrifice flies at seven, placing him second in the conference behind the national leader from New Orleans.

As the season winds to a close, the seniors are looking at their last games at Chapman Field and it was noted by Malone saying, "senior Cassius Shy is looking at his last start at Chapman Field. There's still a lot of baseball to play and I feel like our best days are ahead of us."

The game is available to stream on the Islanders Digital Network.
