CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team claimed a 13-11 victory over McNeese in the series finale on Sunday at Chapman Field in the second-longest game of the season.
"I'm interested to see how many free bases there were in the game," head coach
Scott Malone mentioned about being outhit."We've had some dark innings, but the dark comes before the light and we some light after the dark.
Sophomore
Max Puls hit a perfect four-for-four during the game while scoring four runs and batting in two runners on one walk. Despite being outhit by McNeese 19-11, the Islanders capitalized on their opportunities to win the ballgame with more consistent scoring throughout the game.
A&M-Corpus Christi took an early two-run lead in the bottom of the first with sophomores
Brendan Ryan and
Diego Johnson coming in to score two runs on different plays. The Islanders allowed six runs in the next two innings before striking back in the third, seeing sophomore
Tre Jones and Puls come in to score again.
Over the course of the next three innings, the team earned eight runs as senior
Steven Rivera-Chijin scored off a sacrifice fly by Jones while
Brendan Ryan came home on a wild pitch in the fourth. This marked the third game in which Ryan played since missing nearly a month due to an injury. Puls and junior
Justin Taylor added two more to regain the lead from the Cowboys in the fifth inning before four runs were scored in the sixth. Each of the runs was scored by Jones, sophomore
Josh Caraway, junior
Leo Markotic and Puls, who later scored the final run of the game in the eighth inning.
Senior
Tyler Miller was credited with the victory on the night after pitching two innings and earning a strikeout. Fellow Senior
Henry Bird pitched the last out of the game and earned a strikeout to end the game and earn a save.
Leo Perez, a senior, was given the nod to start and pitched two innings as well as sophomore
