CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team hits the road again for the second weekend in a row to face Southeastern in a three-game matchup at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
"These guys are good at home and have a lot of tradition," said head coach
Scott Malone. "They're a perennial top one or two team in the league and are well coached by Matt Riser. It's a bit of a challenge when you play a team that has super high expectations. They already have wins over Ole Miss and Arkansas so you know they can come out and play at a high level."
The Islanders are coming off of a game against the Corpus Christi Hooks Wednesday night, where despite the 6-2 loss, the team was able to take away some positives. Throughout the season, the team has gone 5-1 in weekend series, having defeated UT Arlington, Stephen F. Austin, Prairie View A&M, Nebraska and UIW. Their lone series loss came last weekend to Northwestern State.
"Southeastern is always talented on the mound and that's where you need to match them," continued Malone. "Our guys need to go out and do well and keep us in the game."
The starting rotation consists of freshman
Zach Garcia, junior
Hayden Thomas and sophomore
Jaime Ramirez Jr. who have all combined for a 7-4 record on the season. Garcia holds onto two saves as Ramirez Jr. is coming off a nine-inning scoreless game against Northwestern State.
Sophomores
Max Puls and
Tyler Linneweber are looking to extend the streak of games started as they remain the last two players to start every game for A&M-Corpus Christi this season. Puls has been consistent behing the plate, hitting .307 and earning 17 runs and 22 RBIs. Linneweber has exceled defensively by partaking in nine double plays and earning a .930 fielding percentage.
Southeastern looks to be a tough opponent, rebounding with a 2-1 series win over UIW after being swept by Nicholls on the road. The Lions hold on to a three-game win streak in which they will look to defend.
Friday will begin the series at 6:00 p.m. before competition resumes at 2:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
