Islanders Gain Valuable Experience in Exhibition Against Hooks

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team matched up with the Hooks, the Double-A affiliate of the Astros, where they fell 6-2 at Whataburger Field.

"The last five innings, the pitchers started pounding the zone and putting pressure on the Hooks," said head coach Scott Malone. "Hopefully we can take the positives out of this game and turn it into a good weekend."

The Islanders saw a multitude of pitchers step up to the mound with sophomore Kennedy Parks, a transfer, getting the nod for the start. Parks pitched for an inning before senior Leo Perez took the mound to start the second. He also went an inning before Cassius Shy, a senior, took the mound for an inning of work.

Fellow senior, Henry Bird earned 1.1 innings of work before junior Justin Lewis came in for relief. Lewis struck out the first batter he saw before finishing out the inning. Lewis earned another strikeout for the first out of the sixth before sophomore Sebastian Mejia saw his time to shine.

Mejia stayed in through the sixth inning before Dom Lopez, a sophomore, came in for the seventh. First baseman Steven Rivera-Chijin, a senior, and Tyler Linneweber, a sophomore, helped Lopez out by catching a runner trying to steal second. Sophomore Dylan Johnson finished out the game for the Islanders.

Sophomore Tre Jones scored first for the Islanders, slamming a home run out to right field to score the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Jones later hit a double out to left field in the eighth to earn an RBI on the night as Brandon Petkoff, a sophomore, came in to score.

Freshman Chance Reisdorph collected a couple hits in the performance as did Tre Jones after his home run. Sophomore Josh Caraway also earned a hit on the night.

A&M-Corpus Christi will hit the road to face Southeastern in a three-game series in Hammond, La. this weekend, beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
