CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fell in the series opener 7-2 against McNeese at Chapman Field Friday night.
"You try and find the positives and I think it was a really great game for six innings and a dog fight," said head coach
Scott Malone. "It was nice to have some stars back as it gives you length in the lineup."
Junior
Hayden Thomas returned to the Friday night starting position after being moved around to fit scheduling opportunities for his twelfth start on the season. He stayed on the mound longest of any Islander at 5.1 innings, only allowing one run in the duration and earning four strikeouts. Freshman
Clay Westbrook relieved him during the sixth inning, closing it down after two strikeouts on five batters.
Sophomore
Jaime Ramirez Jr. kicked off the seventh inning before
Sebastian Mejia came in for two outs after starting on Sunday against New Orleans. Seniors
Daniel Nelson and
Cassius Shy each pitched an inning, earning a strikeout to close out the game.
Sophomore
Brendan Ryan returned to the lineup after a four-week absence in which he recovered from an injury and got a hit on the night. Junior
Justin Taylor and
Brandon Petkoff, a sophomore, also each earned a hit with senior
Steven Rivera-Chijin collecting two. All of the runs batted in came from Rivera-Chijin's work, particularly in the late seventh inning where both runs were scored.
A&M-Corpus Christi and McNeese face off once again tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. as the Islanders seek to even the series, eyeing their first conference victory.
