Baseball Prepared for Matchup in New Orleans

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball program continues its road stretch with a conference series against New Orleans this weekend, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening.
 
"We need someone to step up as we face a variety of injuries," said head coach Scott Malone. "As we turn the corner on the halfway point, we talked about how we need some of the older guys help this team navigate a tough spot."
 
The Islanders are coming off an 8-5 victory over Prairie View A&M where they came back from a 4-2 deficit to win in ten innings. They narrowly outhit the Panthers, accumulating 12 hits in the performance against 11. The pitching staff looks to rest during the travel day as well with nine seeing action on the mound.
 
The team continues to shine on the national level in a variety of statistics, remaining tied for fifth in all of Division I baseball in triples, holding 17 on the season. As a whole, the team has been plunked 64 times in the nation which places them 19th in the nation and second in the conference. Extra-base hits are another bright spot for the Islanders with 75 to put them 43rd overall in the nation.
 
Senior Steven Rivera-Chijin is 13th in the nation having accumulated 16 of the team's doubles which also leads the conference, averaging nearly half a double a game this season. Sophomore Tre Jones looks to build off a strong performance as of late, coming off a three for six batting, two runs and an RBI showing. Jones has collected 16 hits over the prior eight games, scoring 11 times in the same period.
 
Zach Garcia, a freshman, is one of only 50 individuals to pitch a complete game in DI baseball thus far, earning the win against HBU on Friday's seven-inning game. Junior Hayden Thomas has been a consistent starter for the team, having the sixth most starts in the nation and most in the conference  at 10 games.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi plays the ensuing games on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
