PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball is traveling to face the Panthers in a single mid-week game at Tankersley Field at 2:00 p.m. to start a four-game road trip.
"We just need to be ready to play," said head coach
Scott Malone. "Sometimes the Wednesday afternoon game can sneak up on you. Our players will be anxious to get on the field and win a baseball game."
The Islanders and Panthers have faced off four times already this season as A&M-Corpus Christi holds a 3-1 record thus far. Two of the games ended in shut out victories for the Islanders with one coming from a run-rule victory in seven innings. All four games have been played at Chapman Field, marking this the first time the two teams face each other at Prairie View.
As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi leads the conference in quite a few categories, particularly in batting. The Islanders own the most extra-base hits in the Southland with 74 doubles, 17 triples and 34 home runs with only McNeese leading them in triples. As a whole, the team has scored 255 runs off of 348 hits which all lead the conference with another high of 231 runs batted in. The pitching staff has combined for 293 strikeouts throughout the season to hold second in the SLC.
Sophomore
Josh Caraway has been exploding this season, holding the most triples at four and runs batted in at 30 on the squad. Junior
Leo Markotic has the second-most RBIs with 25 as two others sit at 24 apiece in sophomores
Max Puls and
Tyler Linneweber.
Tre Jones, another sophomore on the team, holds the best batting average in the conference since conference play began at .462, hitting 18 for 39 with 13 runs scored. He has earned four of his six home runs during this time span as well.
The Islanders await to see if sophomores
Brendan Ryan and
Diego Johnson make a return to play on the road. Ryan has been out since last playing against Northwestern State while Johnson previously played against UIW where he made a return from another injury.
"Ryan is the straw that makes our offense go," continued Malone. "Maybe the biggest thing is he makes our defense so much better, which makes our pitchers better."
After the midweek game, A&M-Corpus Christi looks to continue the trip as they head further east to play New Orleans in a three-game conference weekend.
