Islanders Blank HBU Twice to Begin Conference Series

HOUSTON, Texas - With 1-0 and 7-0 shutouts over HBU, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team opened the weekend with the doubleheader sweep Friday at Husky Field to secure its second consecutive conference series win.

Game one had senior Grace Gilbert pitch her fourth complete game and earn her fourth win of the season for the Islanders (16-22, 4-4). She kept the Huskies (12-22, 2-8) scoreless and struck out six while she was at it. Gilbert now records a 4.23 ERA.

The only run of the game came in the third which was credited to junior Pal Egan. Egan singled to right field during her second at-bat of the day and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Junior Madison Garza reached first on a fielder's choice and as she was stealing second, Egan ran home after a throwing error by HBU's catcher to give the Islanders the 1-0 lead and eventual win.

Game two had A&M-Corpus Christi in complete control. Freshman Siarah Galvan made the start in the circle for the Islanders and pitched her first complete game. Galvan also silenced the Huskies as she didn't give up any runs and only allowed five hits. She now holds a 2-0 record on the season while also recording the lowest ERA on the team at a 2.63.

The Islanders struck early in game two and got two runs on the board in the first inning after a two-run home run by sophomore Sydney Hoyt. This marked Hoyt's first home run of the season and first once since the shortened 2020 season. Egan scored on Hoyt's homer who previously hit her 14th double of the season to get on base.

Junior Ashleigh Sgambelluri hit a single and advanced to third on a fielding error in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Gabriella Torres then singled to center field to drive in Sgambelluri for the RBI and extend A&M-Corpus Christi's lead to 3-0.

A pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings solidified the win for the Islanders. The sixth inning saw three consecutive hits by freshman Monee Montilla, junior Quinn De Avila and sophomore Shelbie Fickling. Fickling's hit drove in both Montilla and De Avila for the two-RBI and the 5-0 lead.

Another two-run home run gave the Islanders their last two runs of the game, this one by sophomore Haley Morse. Morse earned the two-RBI as she also brought in Sgambelluri for her second run of the game.

Egan went 2-for-3 in game one and 1-for-3 in game two while also getting a run in both games. She extended her streak of reaching base to 15 games and recorded her 15th multi-hit game this season. De Avila and Morse both went 2-for-4 in game two. De Avila also got a hit in the first game which was a double, her first of the season.

The weekend will wrap up with a game three on Saturday set for a 12 p.m. first pitch. The game can be streamed on ESPN+.
