Islanders Complete Series Sweep Over HBU After Another Shutout Win

HOUSTON, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team earned its third consecutive shutout win 2-0 to complete the conference series sweep over HBU at Husky field on Saturday.

The Islanders (17-22, 5-4), who started conference play 0-4, has now won its last five conference games to get back-to-back series wins and switch to a winning 5-4 record.

The day saw two pitchers in the circle for the Islanders. Freshman Denay Smith made the start and kept the Huskies (12-23, 2-9) silent for 3.2 innings. Senior Grace Gilbert came in relief to make her second appearance in the series after pitching a complete-game shutout in game one. Gilbert didn't allow a single HBU hit or run during her time as the reliever to earn the win in the circle, her fifth of the season and most on the team.

The game was scoreless heading to the fifth until junior Pal Egan hit a solo home run to right center field to make it 1-0 Islanders. Egan got a hit earlier in the game to go 2-for-3 at the plate, her 16th multi-hit game this season. She also extended her streak of reaching base to 16 games.

Freshman Monee Montilla got the second RBI of the day after hitting a double to left field to drive in sophomore Sydney Hoyt in the sixth. Up 2-0 in the middle of the sixth, the A&M-Corpus Christi defense got the six outs it needed to finish out the game for the shutout win.

Junior Quinn De Avila also registered a hit on the day and is now on a four-game hitting streak. During conference play, De Avila records the second highest batting average on the team at a .381 while Egan leads the team with a .531. Egan improved to a .430 overall average after the weekend.

The Islanders have outscored their conference opponents 17-4 in the last five games. Six of the 17 points have been off home runs, as A&M-Corpus Christi hit three out of four total during the series with HBU. None of the pitchers for the Islanders have given up a home run while facing a conference team.

The Islanders will take a break from conference play when they head back to Houston to take on Texas Southern. The single matchup is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday at Memorial Park. A&M-Corpus Christi will resume SLC play next weekend when they travel to Nicholls.
