Men’s Tennis Travels to Lamar in Championship Rematch

BEAUMONT, Texas – The last time the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program was at Lamar the Islanders were hoisting the conference championship trophy as the two teams will meet again Thursday at 1 p.m.

It was the final match for Lamar in the Southland Conference before it departed for the WAC over the summer. A&M-Corpus Christi won 4-1 to advance to the NCAA Tournament after winning its second championship of the season.

It will be the last tune-up match for the Islanders (10-7) before starting conference play on March 16 against NJIT at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. A&M-Corpus Christi is wrapping-up a three-match road swing.

The Islanders have been playing shorthanded without their top two singles players from last season, senior Kyohei Yamanaka and sophomore Ryuya Ata. Both have been out due to injury, but junior Matthieu Peres has stepped up to the top line.

Junior Ulysse Bertrand is unbeaten on the road swing after winning both a singles and doubles match at UT Arlington, and a doubles match at Rice. Bertrand is 5-1 in doubles and 5-2 in singles this year.

Lamar (8-3) has won seven matches in a row including the last three over Southern Miss, UAB and Nicholls. The Cardinals are 5-1 at home this season.
