CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball will travel to Edinburg to play UTRGV at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
"They're a mid-major school that knows they can compete with anybody," said head coach
Scott Malone. "They're going to have a good crowd. They'll get after it [as] it's a rivalry game. I'm expecting it to be a really good game."
The first matchup between the two opponents came in 2000 with the teams fighting back-and-forth for the series lead over the years with the Islanders currently leading 47-44. During the 2016 and 2017 seasons, A&M-Corpus Christi went 7-2 against them, later sweeping them in both matchups in 2018.
Islanders Baseball will play its first game in the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. A&M-Corpus Christi leads the matchup 38-10 thus far and looks to extend its lead.
"There's more eyes on you when you play UTRGV," continued Malone, talking about the NavyArmy Community Credit Union matchup. "If soccer, tennis, or any of our sports are playing them, if I'm not there, I'm checking the website later that night to see how we did. You want to be on the right side of the rivalry. Our guys will take a lot of pride in it and we'll give them our best tomorrow."
So far this season, A&M-Corpus Christi has claimed two series victories this season against UT Arlington and former conference opponent Stephen F. Austin. Two of the games against the Lumberjacks went into extra innings with each team claiming an extra-inning victory. The Islanders won two of three games in the Kleberg Bank College Classic before going on to win four of their next five games.
After the game, the Islanders will get two days of rest before hosting Prairie View A&M for a three-game series at Chapman Field.
