CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Before hosting Abilene Christian in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Wednesday at the Dugan Stadium Courts, sophomore
Tori Johnson and freshman
Jade Bennett from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program were honored as the Southland Conference Pair of the Week on Tuesday.
Â
In four weeks, A&M-Corpus Christi (11-6) has won all four SLC Pair of the Week honors as a team.
Â
Johnson and Bennett posted a 3-1 weekend on court two at the Fight at the Fort last weekend, hosted by TCU. They defeated teams from Arizona State, Stephen F. Austin and New Orleans.
Â
"This team has developed into a solid pair for us in the 2's position. They are strong in every skill set and continue to improve every week," said head coach
Gayle Stammer.
The duo helped A&M-Corpus Christi improve to 11-3 on the season against unranked opponents. In the victory over the Privateers, the Islanders extended their winning streak to 16 consecutive regular season matches over SLC opponents.
Â
On Wednesday, the Islanders will host former SLC foe Abilene Christian (1-9), which departed for the WAC over the summer. A&M-Corpus Christi is 5-0 all-time against ACU.
Â
The Islanders are 1-0 at home this year after sweeping Mary Hardin-Baylor 5-0 on March 9. A&M-Corpus Christi is 15-10 all-time at home and 7-1 over the last two seasons.
Â
In addition to Johnson and Bennett, junior
Giuliana Poletti Corrales and sophomore
Brooke Pertuit have won SLC Pair of the Week twice, and grad student
Micaela Mirabal and senior
Aurora Carnes once.
