A&M-Corpus Christi Splits Day One of the Fight in the Fort

FORT WORTH, Texas – After falling to Arizona State 4-1, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program closed out the night with a 3-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Friday at the Fight in the Fort, hosted by TCU.
 
The deciding match for the Islanders (10-5) against SFA (7-8) came on court one. The two-time reigning SLC Pair of the Week winners junior Giuliana Poletti Corrales and sophomore Brooke Pertuit registered a 21-12, 21-15.
 
A 2-0 day came from sophomore Tori Johnson and freshman Jade Bennett. The duo started it off with an impressive 21-13, 21-10 win over Arizona State, and followed it up with a critical 21-9, 23-25, 15-12 victory against SFA.
 
Another key three-set win came at No. 4 against the Ladyjacks. The team of grad student Kiley Lewis and senior Migle Mazurkeviciute tallied a 24-22, 21-24, 15-5 victory.
 
The Islanders improved to 5-0 all-time against SFA.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is 10-3 against unranked teams this year. Arizona State is receiving votes.
 
The Islanders will close out the tournament Saturday against New Orleans at 7:30 a.m. and No. 3 TCU at 11:30 a.m. as they go for their first-ever win over a ranked opponent.
