Baseball Begins Road Trip Against No. 21 TCU and Tarleton St.; Malone Faces Alma Matter

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball begins a stretch on the road, starting with No. 21 TCU and Tarleton State on Tuesday and Wednesday as head coach Scott Malone travels to take on his alma mater in the prior game.

"I'd love to go beat TCU; it's home for me and we've been there a couple of times since I've been here," said Malone. "It would mean a lot to me to take this club and get a win. It's a talented and older club. I'd like to see us at full steam getting after these guys."

Malone competed at the university for three years as a first baseman, earning All-American honors in 1991 and 1992 before the Texas Rangers drafted him. He was inducted into the TCU Hall of Fame in 2011.

The two teams have competed against each other eight times with the last coming March 5, 2021. TCU will mark the third power five team the Islanders have faced, the last being a 2-1 win over Iowa in 11 innings. A&M-Corpus Christi and Tarleton State have only competed against each other once with the Islanders claiming a 5-4 victory in April of 2000.

The Islanders come off of a three-game series at home against Prairie View A&M, winning the series 2-1 to improve their all-time record against the program 30-2. In the final game of the series, A&M-Corpus Christi earned its second shut-out win of the season 12-0 with the other coming against the Panthers as well nearly two weeks before.

Sophomore Max Puls exploded the past four games to lead the team with a .412 average, hitting 7-17 with a double, and scoring three runs on the weekend. He is tied with junior Leo Markotic for the most RBIs on the team with 15. Adding to his accolades, Puls is tied for the second-most triples in the conference, sitting behind sophomore Josh Caraway who leads with three.

Brendan Ryan, another sophomore, leads the team in batting average (.362) and runs (17). He's accumulated seven doubles, a triple and two home runs with 10 RBIs. Ryan won Southland Conference Hitter of the Week in week three and leads the conference with 25 hits. He also sits in the top ten nationally with 14 stolen bases.

The game against TCU will be able to be streamed on ESPN+ and the Tarleton State game will be available on the WAC Digital Network. After the two games, the team will head up to Nebraska for a three-game series from Friday to Sunday.
