ELMWOOD, La. – A back-and-forth at the Tulane Classic saw the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program beat UNO 4-1, fall to Tulane 3-2 and bounce back to top UAB 3-2 in an impromptu match at the White Sands Volleyball Courts.
A&M-Corpus Christi (8-4) had to fend off tough conditions which included a rain delay and the UAB match being moved to Friday instead of Saturday.
With the victory over UNO, the Islanders have won 15 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents dating back to 2019.
A 3-0 day came from junior
Giuliana Poletti Corrales and sophomore
Brooke Pertuit, the reigning SLC Pair of the Week winners. The duo grinded out a trio of three set wins on court one.
Against the Privateers, the Islanders won a pair of straight setters on courts four and five. The team of grad student
Micaela Mirabal and senior
Aurora Carnes won 21-11, 21-14 on court four, and grad student
Kiley Lewis and freshman
Hannah Doyle won 21-12, 21-14 on court five.
A&M-Corpus Christi capped it with a pair of three-setters at the top. Corrales and Pertuit came back for a 21-13, 21-19, 15-9 decision, while sophomore
Tori Johnson and freshman
Jade Bennett edged out a 21-18, 18-21, 15-11 victory.
It was another tough fight against the Green Wave. Corrales and Pertuit notched a 21-17, 16-21, 15-11 win, and Carnes and Mirabal won their second match of the day 21-14, 21-16 on court four.
In the finale against UAB, the match came down to just a few points. Johnson and Bennett were deadlocked at 14-14 in the third set of the deciding match they won the next tw points to complete a 17-21, 21-19, 16-14 win.
A&M-Corpus Christi will close out the weekend at 11:15 a.m. Saturday against Nicholls.
