CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team won their second game in a row against Prairie View A&M at Chapman Field with a 7-0 shutout.
"The pitchers take a lot of pride in shutouts," said head coach
Scott Malone. "It's hard to shut anyone out. It's hard to go nine innings and not give up a big hit, not give up a walk, a triple, or anything like that. From the coach's side, we had a lot of guys out there. [Sophomore]
Dylan Johnson and [freshman]
Marco Gutierrez got their first appearances of the season."
Senior
Cassius Shy made the start for the Islanders and pitched three innings, only allowing two walks in the process. He earned his first win in the process before being relieved by freshman
Marco Gutierrez. His appearance on the mound marked the first of his collegiate career and it proved to be fruitful as he faced three batters and took them all down.
Colin Purcell, a sophomore, was the next pitcher to take the mound in a variety of changes. After pitching an inning and earning the first strikeout for the team, Purcell was relieved by fellow sophomore
Sebastian Mejia. Three more pitchers, freshman
Kyle Dickey and sophomores
Dylan Johnson and
JT Moeller, came in to pitch an inning a piece.
A&M-Corpus Christi began the game off on the right foot in the bottom of the first as junior
Leo Markotic knotched an infield single to the shortstop to leadoff the game. A single by
Brendan Ryan, a sophomore, pushed Markotic all the way to third base. Ryan then stole second during sophomore
Diego Johnson's at-bat, in which he earned himself an RBI on a ground out.
The Islanders made the score 2-0 as
Max Puls, another sophomore, singled to center field, scoring Ryan on the play. Puls then advanced on a ground out by sophomore
Josh Caraway. That brought up senior
Steven Rivera-Chijin who walked to get on base before a fly out by
Justin Taylor ended the first inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Islanders' bats remained hot as
John Maldonado Jr., a sophomore, singled out to left field. He was then narrowly caught stealing during sophomore
Tyler Linneweber's at bat, which he eventually tripled out to left in. Markotic came up to the plate next and reached base on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Linneweber to score. Ryan followed that up with a double to right, moving Markotic to third. Johnson came up next and singled, bringing in both Markotic and Ryan to bring the score to 6-0 before the inning ended.
The third and fourth innings remained quiet, but Caraway walked on a full count to begin the fifth. Two more outs ensued, but the Islanders didn't give up hope. Maldonado Jr. walked, bringing up Linneweber who was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Markotic was also hit by a pitch, bringing Caraway in to score the seventh and final run of the game.
Baseball will get a couple of days off before facing Stephen F. Austin this weekend in a three-game series starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
