Men’s Tennis Faces UL-Lafayette on Neutral Court in Houston

HOUSTON – In a match hosted by Rice University, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program will take-on UL-Lafayette at 12 p.m. Saturday.
 
The Islanders are off to a 5-1 start on the season. They are coming off a 4-3 road win over UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is 25-8 in singles and 12-4 in doubles this year as a team. Individually, senior Kyohei Yamanaka and sophomore Guillermo Castaneda lead the team with four singles wins apiece.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns are 3-1 with wins over Abilene Christian 6-1, Tyler JC 6-1 and Xavier (LA) 4-0. Their only loss was on the road at UTSA 6-1.
 
"This is one of those long standing rivalries that has become a pillar for both schools. We have tremendous amount of respect for the Cajuns and our matches are always intense battles – respectful but incredibly fierce competition. They always have a nationally ranked team that fights hard, and we know tomorrow will be a battle because it always is. We have to show up with great brotherhood, unity, energy and play every point with intensity, and I know guys are committed to doing that," said head coach Steve Moore.
 
The Islanders have won four consecutive neutral court matches dating back to 2019. It includes a win in the SLC semifinals vs. UIW last year, a win over Northern Arizona in 2020 in Lafayette and victories over Northern Arizona and Alcorn State in 2019 in Lafayette. Their last neutral court loss was to Elon in 2019 at Rice.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is 11-8 all-time against the Ragin' Cajuns and won last year's meeting 4-1 in Corpus Christi. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two on a neutral court.
