Women’s Tennis Squares Off with Former SLC Foes Lamar, SHSU

BEAUMONT, Texas – In what used to be conference matches, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program will play non-conference contests against Lamar at 12 p.m. Monday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center and Sam Houston at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the McAdams Tennis Center.

Sunday will be a rematch of last year's Southland Conference finals after A&M-Corpus Christi (11-2) defeated Lamar 4-0 in Beaumont to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Islanders brought back their entire lineup from that team.

A&M-Corpus Christi has won four consecutive matches, most recently with sweeps over UTRGV 7-0 and UTSA 4-0. The Islanders have not dropped a point during their winning-streak, and didn't drop a set against the Roadrunners.

"I think every coach and player involved agrees that these long-time rivals are special rivalries and it's important we keep playing these matches. These are coaches and teams we have great respect for and a long respectful rivalry," said head coach Steve Moore. "Our girls are working extremely hard, improving every week, both our game and our fitness, and we are super excited as a unified family for the chance to compete every present point with intensity."

The Islanders are 54-15 as a team in singles and 27-7 in doubles. Sophomores Leopoldine Boisseau and Emma Honore are on five-match winning-streaks in singles, and sophomore Emma Aucagne is the reigning SLC Player of the Week winner after shining at the No. 1 position.

The Islanders are 12-9 all-time against Lamar (5-2) and have won four in a row. Nobody on A&M-Corpus Christi's roster has ever lost to Lamar.

A&M-Corpus Christi is 12-8 all-time against Sam Houston (4-4) and won last season 4-3 as sophomore Victoire Delattre came back to win the clinching match 6-7, 6-4, 6-0.

It will be the final tune-up matches for the Islanders before they open SLC play against UIW on Saturday, March 12 at 12 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
