HOUSTON, Texas - In rematch games on the last day of the 2022 Houston Tournament, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team split the day again, this time outlasting Northern Colorado 10-9 and dropping 4-1 to Houston on Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Game one of the day saw a high-scoring competition between the Islanders (9-10) and the Bears (4-10) with the majority of the scoring coming in the early innings. For A&M-Corpus Christi's first at-bat, junior
Pal Egan homered to center field to give the Islanders the early jump, her second homerun of the season.
The homerun created momentum for the Islanders as they went on to tack on seven runs in the first inning, including runs by sophomores
Sydney Hoyt and
Kimane Rogron, to lead 7-0 going into the second.
Northern Colorado slowly chipped away at the deficit throughout the entirety of the game and even tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the fourth before the Islanders scored two more of their own in the bottom to take the lead back 9-7.
Two runs late in the seventh by Northern Colorado brought the game within one run, but it wasn't enough as the Islanders were able to outlast the Bears for the 10-9 win.
Egan and Hoyt each got two runs in the game against Northern Colorado and Egan got three hits, a game-high. Hoyt leads the team in batting average with a .385. Leading the team in all three categories, Egan records 18 runs, 21 hits and 13 RBIs on the season.
Rogron also tallied two runs against the Bears, one being in the form of a solo homerun she hit to left field in the third inning. She is on a 10-game streak of getting a hit and reaching base.
In the circle, sophomore
Audrey McNeill earned the win for the Islanders pitching for four innings. Senior
Grace Gilbert came in the fifth as relief to strike out two batters after pulling in a run and a hit as a batter herself.
In game two, A&M-Corpus Christi couldn't get the same momentum against Houston (6-8). The only score by the Islanders came in the sixth on an RBI single by Rogron to score Hoyt. Freshman
Denay Smith saw her first collegiate start and pitched five scoreless innings. She struck out her game-high of five batters.
Sophomore
Haley Morse registered a hit in each game. She is on an eight-game streak of reaching base.
The Islanders will next take on Texas State in a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday. A&M-Corpus Christi will look to break a seven-game losing streak to the Bobcats.
