Baseball Walks Off In Eleventh Inning Against Iowa

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team walked off against Iowa in the bottom of the eleventh inning for a 2-1 victory at Whataburger Field.

"The pitchers as a whole are in a rhythm right now," said head coach Scott Malone. "[Senior] Henry Bird wasn't scared at the end. No spots is too big for him and I know he's gonna throw a lot of strikes with confidence. [Sophomore] JT Moeller is beyond my expectations. That's probably as good as I've seen him.

The Islanders began the game strong by taking an early 1-0 lead off of junior Leo Markotic's home run to right field, splashing in the pool.

To begin the fourth inning, Iowa would homer to right field to tie the game at one a piece. On the flip side of the inning, Markotic would reach base on an error by the third baseman before sophomore Max Puls singled to right field on an 0-2 count to advance Markotic to second. A double play right after would end the inning for the Islanders.

As the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore Tyler Linneweber walked which allowed him to reach second on a [year] Diego Johnson single in the next at bat. After a couple outs, Puls would come up to the plate, reaching first on an error and allowing the base runners to advance a base each. A line out on the next at bat would end the inning.

Senior Leo Perez started on the mound for A&M-Corpus Christi and went on to pitch six full innings. During his time up, Perez struck out five batters while only allowing one walk and one earned run. He finished the performance with a 1.50 ERA.

Moeller would come in to relieve Perez in the top of the seventh. The appearance would be his first of the year. Moeller would pitch 3.0 innings, earning six strikeouts for a 0.00 ERA.

After six scoreless innings, the Islanders were able to get on base in the bottom of the 11th inning as Brendan Ryan would single to get on base. He was able to steal second before a single by Puls would bring him in to score the winning run.

"Max Puls with the huge RBI there to walk those guys off," said Malone. "I'm excited about how we played and beat a really good Big Ten team that hasn't lost all year."

A&M-Corpus Christi will play Pepperdine in the final game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
