A Late Comeback Gives Softball the Edge over Houston, Falls to Northern Colorado

Game Notes | Tournament Central | ESPN+ (vs Houston)

HOUSTON, Texas - On day two of the Houston Tournament, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program split the day with a 6-0 loss to Northern Colorado and 8-7 victory over Houston which featured a seventh-inning comeback on Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.

A&M-Corpus Christi (8-9) couldn't get going in game one of the day against Northern Colorado (3-9) but warmed up in time for the competition with Houston (5-8).

Sophomore Kimane Rogron accounted for the team's only hit in the game against the Bears. She also got a hit against Houston and is now on an eight-game streak of both getting a hit and reaching base.

Coming out hot, junior Pal Egan hit a double in her first at-bat against Houston to get in scoring position. Both her and sophomore Sydney Hoyt earned runs in the first inning. They are tied for the team's leading batting average at .375.

The Cougars followed up A&M-Corpus Christi's two runs with five of their own in the bottom of the first to lead for the majority of the game. It wasn't until the Islanders went on a five-run boost in the seventh that the tide of the game turned.

Down by three runs, freshman Monee Montilla got the comeback started for the Islanders with a solo homerun, her first collegiate homerun, to bring the game to 6-4. Egan and Hoyt both scored another run each to tie the game. Two more runs for the Islanders gave them the 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Houston managed to score one more run, but it wasn't enough as the Islanders got the three outs they needed to escape with the 8-7 win. Senior Grace Gilbert got the win at the mound and pitched for a near-complete game. She struck out three Cougars and pitched four scoreless innings.

The Islanders will play both teams again on Sunday to conclude their tournament campaign. A&M-Corpus Christi will look to get revenge on Northern Colorado at 9 a.m. and then go for the sweep over Houston at 4:30 p.m.

The game against the Cougars will be streamed on ESPN+.
