ESPN+ (vs. Houston)
HOUSTON, Texas - In a late comeback by Lamar, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team dropped game one of the 2022 Houston Tournament 5-3 on Friday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
The Islanders (7-8) led the game 3-0 through five innings. An RBI by freshman
Jaquelin Garza scored sophomore
Kimane Rogron for A&M-Corpus Christi's first run against Lamar (3-8). Rogron is on a six-game hitting streak.
Junior
Pal Egan earned a run in the second inning to bring her season total to 14, the highest on the team. Egan also leads the team in hits with 16 and RBIs with 12.
Inning five saw A&M-Corpus Christi's final run of the game when senior
Grace Gilbert scored on a Cardinal error.Â
All of Lamar's runs came in the sixth inning to give them the late 5-3 lead and eventual final score as the Islanders couldn't cut the deficit.
Sophomore
Sydney Hoyt got a hit against the Cardinals and is now on an 11-game streak of reaching base. She leads the team in batting average and on-base percentage with a .429 and .600, respectively.
Gilbert pitched for the first five innings of the game and struck out four batters. In relief, freshman
Denay Smith pitched for the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow any hits or runs. She also struck out her first batter of the season.
A&M-Corpus Christi will face Northern Colorado and Houston on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. It will mark only the second time the Islanders and the Bears have faced each other with the last time being in 2005 when the Islanders won 3-1. This will be the first time since 2018 that A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston play each other.
The game against the Cougars will be streamed on ESPN+.
