Beach Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Opening Day with Wins over UL-Monroe, Southeastern

HOUSTON – Getting off to a strong start to the 2022 season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program defeated UL-Monroe 4-1 and Southeastern 3-2 on Friday at the HBU Tournament at Third Coast Volleyball Club.
 
With the victory over Southeastern, the Islanders have won 12 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents dating back to 2019 and are 3-0 against SLU. A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 6-3 all-time against UL-Monroe and have won six in a row.
 
The Islanders garnered 2-0 outings on courts one, three and five.
 
"I thought we came prepared to battle and took care of business today. Our freshmen are stepping up and our veterans are showing great leadership on the courts," said head coach Gayle Stammer.
 
On court one, the returning top duo of junior Giuliana Poletti Corrales and sophomore Brooke Pertuit did not drop a set and clinched the match against the Lady Lions. They defeated UL-Monroe 21-12, 21-17 and Southeastern 21-13, 21-18. It came after the pair won 11 matches last season and were All-Conference honorees.
 
Returners Micaela Mirabal (grad student) and Aurora Carnes (senior) also registered a pair of straight-set wins. They ousted UL-Monroe 21-11, 21-16 and SLU 21-11, 21-10 on court five.
 
On court three, sophomore Tori Johnson teamed with freshman Jade Bennett and the new combo cruised to a pair of wins. They topped UL-Monroe 21-13, 21-16 and SLU 21-14, 21-10.
 
The lone three-set win came on court two for the Islanders against the Warhawks. Junior Migle Mazurkeviciute and newcoming junior Shea Slusser outlasted Kayla Gallant and Rylin Adams 21-17, 17-21, 15-13.
 
The Islanders will play two more matches Saturday against New Orleans at 9 a.m. and HBU at 1 p.m.
