Baseball Prepares To Host Kleberg Bank College Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Continuing its home stand, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball program will host Kleberg Bank College Classic this weekend at Whataburger Field.

"The Kleberg Bank College Classic is always a big week for us," said head coach Scott Malone. "Any time we get those few and far between opportunities to play at Whataburger Field, you want to show well."

The Islanders will play three games, beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. against Wichita State before facing Iowa on Saturday, also in tht 6:00 p.m. slot. The time slot will switch on Sunday as the game against Pepperdine will be at 3:00 p.m. The other three teams will play each other once in the morning slates.

Iowa will make its first appearance at the tournament since 2013, the last time the Islanders and Hawkeyes faced each other. The programs met twice before that in 2011 when they played them at a neutral site. During the second game on the neutral site, the Islanders took a 5-4 victory before heading home.

A&M-Corpus Christi will have their first matchups in program history against Wichita State and Pepperdine. The Shockers come into Corpus Christi with an 0-4 record after playing a three game series at Louisiana Tech, who hosted an NCAA regional in the baseball Field of 64 last season, and one game at Oklahoma. The Waves have a 4-0 record on the season, having defeated Villanova thrice and UCLA on the road.

Pepperdine will stay for an additional day after the tournament's conclusion to play the Islanders at Chapman Field Monday at noon. On Tuesday, A&M-Corpus Christi will face off against Prairie View A&M, also at Chapman Field, at 6:30 p.m. before getting a day of rest.

"Five games in five days, it's a lot," said Malone. "There's several guys that are waiting for their debut. Guys will need to move around a little. You're going to see some different pieces at some point. To me, this is the fun part; it's a fun problem to have."

A&M-Corpus Christi has dominated the Panthers over the years with a 26-1 record. The Islanders have walked away victorious in the last six matchups against the program, the most recent being an 8-4 win on the road in February of 2020.

A&M-Corpus Christi began the season by coming off of a 2-1 series win over UT Arlington on the road before coming home to face No. 1 Texas. In a two game series, the Islanders fell in both, coming within a run on Wednesday, being edged out 4-5. The team has played all of their home games at Whataburger Field thus far this season, meaning the Sunday game will be the first played on Chapman Field since the 2021 season.

Every game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic will be streamed by FloBaseball.
