Islanders Fall to Texas In Game One

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team fell to the top-ranked Longhorns 12-0 at Whataburger Field Tuesday night.

"My takeaway are those guys are good and they gave [junior] Hayden Thomas very little," said head coach Scott Malone. "They made him earn everything. If he made a good pitch, they fouled it off. If he made any mistakes in the middle, they hit it hard. They are a very talented group and they don't give you an easy half inning."

Thomas made the start for the Islanders and gave up only two runs in 3.2 innings of work, but ultimately ended with the loss. Before exiting the game, Thomas earned five strikeouts and finished with a 9.64 ERA. He was one of five pitchers to take the mound, including appearances by sophomores Colin Purcell, Dom Lopez, Sebastian Mejia and senior Cassius Shy. Shy posted an ERA of 0.00 in an inning of work, collecting a strikeout along the way.

Junior Brendan Ryan led the batters for A&M-Corpus Christi, going 1-2 on the day for a .500 average. Ryan was hit by a pitch in the second at-bat of the day for the Islanders before later being hit again in the third inning. He got his shot to hit a single in the eighth inning by hitting the ball out to second base.

Sophomore Tyler Linneweber collected the other hit for the Islanders with a hit out to right field. It marked his third hit of the season after helping the team against UT Arlington by advancing runners during his at bats.

The team is looking ahead to tomorrow and will not let the loss keep them down. Malone is spreading a message of another opportunity to do the best they can to compete for a win tomorrow.

"We've got to respond," said Malone. "I don't feel bad for my guys. We know how to compete. We know when you put a jersey on, you might get your tail whipped no matter what sport you play. We got it tonight. I want to see us respond. I want to see us with more energy in here. The great thing about baseball is you don't have to wait a week. We get them again tomorrow."

Attendance for the game amounted to 4,372 people coming out to support the teams. Both teams will face off against each other again tomorrow at Whataburger Field at 4:05 p.m.
