Islanders Win a Pair on Saturday in Rematches

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program redeemed themselves in a pair of rematch games on Saturday topping Syracuse 3-2 and Alabama State 14-4 on day two of the Whataburger Softball Invitational at the Tarleton State softball complex. It included a walk-off homerun by freshman Jaquelin Garza.

In game one, the Islanders (7-6) got out to an early lead in the first inning with a score by senior Grace Gilbert. Sophomore Sydney Hoyt got the RBI with a single to center field. Hoyt is on a nine-game streak of reaching base after the day and leads the team with a .476 batting average.

Junior Pal Egan scored again for the Islanders in the fifth to bring the team's lead to 2-0. Syracuse (7-2) brought it to a close game by scoring two runs in the seventh to tie the game, but a walk-off homerun by Garza solidified the win for the Islanders. Garza is the second player on the team to hit a homerun on the season.

A&M-Corpus Christ's rematch against Alabama State (4-6) was more dominant, with the game ending after five innings due to the mercy rule being enforced.

The Islanders got out to an early lead again in game two with two runs being scored in the first, however, the Islanders ran away with the game in the second and third innings scoring five and six runs, respectively. Egan tallied three runs and four RBIs. She records the most RBIs on the team with 12. Gilbert and Hoyt both registered two runs.

Sophomore Gabriella Torres played a major part in game two by recording a game-high of six RBIs. She also got a hit and two runs against the Hornets.

Gilbert got her first win in the circle and pitched a complete game against the Orange. She struck out six batters.

A&M-Corpus Christi will conclude the Whataburger Softball Invitational with a game against host Tarleton State. The first pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
