STEPHENVILLE, Texas - On day one of the Whataburger Softball Invitational, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program fell to Alabama State 5-0 and Syracuse 3-1 on Friday at the Tarleton State softball complex.
With at least one hit in both games, sophomore
Sydney Hoyt improved her batting average to a .421, the highest on the team, and is on a seven-game streak of reaching base safely.
A&M-Corpus Christi (5-6) managed to get five hits in the game against Alabama State (3-4) but couldn't pull in a run. Hoyt tallied two and the freshman designated player
Monee Montilla knocked a hit in each game to improve her batting average to .364.
The Islanders scored once on the day and it came from junior
Pal Egan in the sixth inning against Syracuse (6-0). Egan doubled to left center to get her into scoring position and Hoyt followed her up with a single to be accredited the RBI. Egan has reached base in nine of the season's 10 games and leads the team with a .688 slugging percentage.
Hoyt and Egan are tied for having the most RBIs of the team at eight.
In game two, Syracuse got out to an early 3-0 lead by the end of the third. Despite the late score by Egan, the Islanders weren't able to cut the deficit and dropped the game in a close 3-1 competition.
Senior
Grace Gilbert pitched three scoreless innings in relief against Syracuse and struck out four to prevent another Orange run.
A&M-Corpus Christi will continue tournament play on Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. rematch against Syracuse. At noon, the Islanders will look to take on Alabama State again. The tournament will conclude for the Islanders after they take on host Tarleton State in a 11:30 a.m. matchup on Sunday.
