Women’s Basketball Hosts SLU in First-Place Showdown at American Bank Center

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
With the opportunity to move into first-place, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program will face Southeastern at 5 p.m. Thursday at the American Bank Center.
 
The Islanders (15-7, 7-1 SLC) have won 10 of their last 11 games and are a half-game out of first place in the loss column in the Southland Conference standings behind Southeastern (12-7, 8-1 SLC). The winner of Thursday's game will be alone in first-place.
 
The Islanders are a perfect 11-0 at home where they've outscored the opposition 770-545. They have the 11th longest active home winning streak in the country.
 
The Islanders are on a four-game winning-streak and coming off an unbeaten road weekend at New Orleans and Nicholls. Both games were wire-to-wire wins where A&M-Corpus Christi never trailed.
 
Junior Alecia Westbrook ranks 22nd in the nation in rebounding (10.7 rpg) and averages a double-double with 12.8 points per game. She's a three-time SLC Player of the Week winner this year. Westbrook leads the SLC in rebounding and is second in steals (2.3 spg), third in minutes (32.6 mpg) and fourth in FG% (.503).
 
The team leader in scoring is senior Makinna Serrata with 13.5 points per game, including 16.0 in conference. Serrata ranks third in the SLC in both scoring and field goal percentage (.509)
 
Sophomore Violeta Verano leads the league in assists with 4.6 per game and has dished out at least a pair of assists in every game this year. Verano is averaging 9.8 points per game in conference.
 
Sophomore Nabaweeyah McGill ranks second in the SLC in blocks with 1.3 per game. Her season-high is seven against UIW in the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
The Lady Lions are looking to bounce back from their first conference loss of the year 51-40 against HBU. SLU plays in a lot of low scoring games and leads the league in scoring defense, allowing just 54.3 points per game. Caitlyn Williams shoots a league-leading .543 from the field and averages 11.4 points and 8.6 rebounds in conference.

NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi is 11-9 all-time against SLU and 6-3 at home. The Islanders haven't lost to the Lady Lions at home since 2012-13.
 
- Head coach Royce Chadwick reached the 700-win total in his career this season and is up to 704. Chadwick also has 207 career SLC victories and is chasing James Smith's mark of 210 wins at Northwestern State from 1987-04 to become the winningest coach in league history. Chadwick's career SLC record is 207-98 including 13 wins at Sam Houston, 111 at Stephen F. Austin and 83 at A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi ranks 20th in the nation in steals per game (11.0 spg) and 21st in field goal percentage defense (.358). In addition to those categories, the Islanders lead the SLC in assists (15.4 apg) and rebounding margin (+5.8).
 
- The Islanders have not allowed more than 61 points in a conference game this year and have held half their opponents to under 50 points.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is 14-0 when leading at half and 13-0 when it outrebounds the opposition.
 
- There are only four current student-athletes in the entire Southland Conference that have won an SLC championship, and all four are on A&M-Corpus Christi: Westbrook, Serrata, Hayle Campbell and Olivia Dowden.
