Men’s Basketball Goes for Season Sweep over SLU

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas
– The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program returns home Thursday to face Southeastern at 7:30 p.m. at the American Bank Center.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (16-9, 3-5 SLC) is going for the season sweep over SLU (14-12, 6-3 SLC) after winning 86-71 on the road on Jan. 27. In that game, juniors Isaac Mushila and Trevian Tennyson scored 19 points apiece. Senior De'Lazarus Keys submitted 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
 
In total, the Islanders garnered five double-figure scorers against SLU. A&M-Corpus Christi erased a two-point halftime deficit and outscored the Lions by 17 in the second half.
 
Mushila has won two Southland Conference Player of the Week awards this season. He averages 14.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per outing, including 14.4 points and 12.8 rebounds in conference. Mushila has nine double-doubles on the year. Mushila, who did not start until the fifth game, has netted over 20 points five times.
 
Along with Mushila, Tennyson averages in double-figures with 12.8 points per game and is tied with Mushila with a team-high 14.4 points per outing in conference. Tennyson is coming off a 20-point outing against Nicholls and has hit a three-pointer in every game this year.
 
Junior Terrion Murdix leads the SLC in assists (3.8 apg) and is third in both steals (1.8 spg) and assist:turnover ratio (1.5). Murdix is averaging 12.3 points per game in conference.
 
Senior Myles Smith continues to climb the school record books. He ranks fourth all-time in three-pointers made (151), sixth in assists (276), seventh in minutes (3,064) and ninth in double-figure scoring games (56). Smith has scored 1,139 points and is averaging 8.1 points per game this year.
 
Senior Simeon Fryer is the only student-athlete on the roster to start in every game this year. He's shooting .366 from long range which is a significant improvement from his .224 from last year. Fryer is averaging 8.1. points per game and is coming off a season-high 21 points at Nicholls.
 
The Lions are coming off an unbeaten home weekend with wins over McNeese 91-86 and HBU 89-84. Gus Okafor averages 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds on the year, while Jalyn Hinton is the team leader in conference games with 16.2 points and 8.4 rebounds.
 
SLU gets up and down the floor and is averaging 82.7 points per game in conference.

NOTES
- The Islanders are 12-8 all-time against Southeastern and 8-3 at home.
 
- The Islanders are 8-2 at home this year, 209-103 all-time at home and 139-75 all-time in the American Bank Center.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has more than tripled its win total from last season when it finished 5-19 overall.
 
- The Islanders are one win away from clinching a winning season overall.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi ranks 12th in the nation in turnovers forced per game (17.64), 14th in offensive rebounds per game (13.1) and 23rd in steals per game (8.9). Mushila is 12th in offensive rebounds (3.4 orpg) and 16th in total rebounds per game (9.9 rpg).
 
- In addition to the categories where they rank nationally, the Islanders lead the SLC in scoring defense (70.1 ppg) and turnover margin (+3.4).
 
- All 13 student-athletes that have played for A&M-Corpus Christi this year have scored in double-figures in a game. The 13 is tied for the most in the nation with Bowling Green.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is 11-0 this season when holding the opposition to under 70 points.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is the only team in the SLC to have received votes this year in the CollegeInsider Mid Major Top-25 Poll.
