CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - In the 2022 home opener at Chapman Field, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team swept Green Bay in a doubleheader on Tuesday after stellar performances coming from in the circle.
Junior
Beatriz Lara earned her second win of the season in game one against Green Bay (3-4). With four appearances so far, Lara turned in a 3.44 ERA and added four more strikeouts to her record.
Sophomore Megan Depew was the starting pitcher for the Islanders (3-4) in the second game of the day and shut Green Bay out. Depew struck out eight batters, two crucial ones coming from late in the sixth inning when the bases were loaded.Â
Both threw complete games and had three hitless innings. The only Phoenix run scored was unearned and came in the first inning of the first game.
In game one, sophomore
Kimane Rogron registered her first run of the season in the bottom of the sixth. This came on an RBI double by sophomore
Sydney Hoyt.Â
At bat, junior
Pal Egan continues to lead A&M-Corpus Christi with a .400 batting average. She earned two runs on the day, one per game, and tallied four hits and three RBIs. Egan has reached base in every game of the season. Freshman
Paolina Baez recorded her first multi-hit game of the season and totaled three between the two games.Â
In game two, Hoyt and junior
Ashleigh Sgambelluri helped the Islanders get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when they both pulled in a hit and RBI. It continues Sgambelluri's five-game streak of getting a hit.
The games marked the first-ever meetings between the two teams and the Islanders now hold the 2-0 overall record against Green Bay.
The Islanders will compete at home again on Wednesday against Prairie View A&M in another doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. and both games can be watched on ESPN+.
