COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The first win of the 2022 season came for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program on Saturday during day two of the Texas A&M Aggie Classic where they split the day with a 2-0 win against UTA and 3-11 loss to Texas A&M.
Sophomore
Gabriella Torres was the only player to record a hit during both games. She is averaging a .333 and has totaled four hits and three runs during the tournament so far.
The Islanders (1-3) took on UTA (0-3) in an early morning matchup. A scoreless regulation forced an extra eighth inning where A&M-Corpus Christi was finally able to pull in two runs and go on to win the game 2-0. Sophomore
Haley Morse and junior
Pal Egan were accredited the RBIs.
Freshman
Alyssa Aguilar had her first collegiate start at the mound and held UTA to two hits and zero runs. Junior
Beatriz Lara relieved Aguilar in the third. She pitched a scoreless 5.2 innings and struck out six Mavericks.
Junior
Ashleigh Sgambelluri's bat was hot early against Texas A&M (4-0) when she doubled down the right field line to score two runs in the first inning. The Islanders reached base at least once during every inning of the game and tallied one more run in the third.
A&M-Corpus Christi's downfall came from the defensive side in the game against the Aggies. Despite the early 2-0 lead, six errors were committed by the Islanders to allow Texas A&M to run away with the game in the fifth inning.
The Islanders will conclude tournament play on Sunday after a rematch against WKU at 10 a.m.
