Men’s Basketball Travels for Stiff Test at Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program heads to Oklahoma State for a 2 p.m. matinee Tuesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
 
The Islanders (6-5) are coming off a lopsided 104-69 win over Schreiner on Education Day. A&M-Corpus Christi welcomed students from Zavala Elementary, Crockett Elementary, Gibson Elementary, Evans Elementary and West Oso Elementary. Senior Isaac Mushila registered a game-high 19 points, while sophomore Jordan Roberts tallied a career-high 17 points.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi ranks 11th in the nation in steals per game (10.5), 14th in turnovers forced per game (18.5) and 17th in free throw percentage (.776). Individually, senior Isaac Mushila is top-five in the country in offensive rebounds per game (4.1), 14th in rebounding (10.2 rpg) and 16th in double-doubles (5).
 
The Islanders rank first in the Southland Conference in scoring (80.2 ppg), free throw percentage (.776), assists (16.3 apg), assist:turnover ratio (1.2) and defensive rebounding (24.6 drpg).
 
Mushila is currently averaging a double-double of 15.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. He's one of four Islanders averaging in double-figure scoring along with senior Trevian Tennyson (12.5 ppg), senior Terrion Murdix (10.5 ppg) and graduate Ross Williams (10.3 ppg).
 
Murdix ranks second in the league in steals (2.2 spg) and assist:turnover ratio (2.5) and is top-five in assists (3.9 apg).
 
The Cowboys (7-4) are coming off a double-figure 59-49 win over Wichita State on Saturday. Oklahoma State also has wins over UT Arlington, Oakland, DePaul, Tulsa, Prairie View A&M and Sam Houston.
 
Oklahoma State holds teams to just 61.8 points per game and a .364 field goal percentage. Offensively, Avery Anderson III scores a team-high 12.4 points per game and is a .904 (47-52) free throw shooter.
 
It will be the final game before Christmas break for A&M-Corpus Christi, which will be off from competition until Dec. 28 when it hosts Our Lady of the Lake at 4 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
NOTES
- Tuesday will be the 11th meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and Oklahoma State and the first since Dec. 29, 2018. The Islanders are going for their first win in the series.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has four wins over the Big 12 in program history with two over TCU, one over Texas Tech and one against Baylor. The last was Dec. 22, 2005 over TCU 55-49.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi's last win against any Power 5 institution was 2009-10 against Oregon State 67-43.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi will play its sixth contest away from home in its last eight. It included 20 days between home games.
 
- The Islanders are 8-3 in the month of December under head coach Steve Lutz in two seasons. Their only losses are against Power Five schools Minnesota, Notre Dame and Arizona.
 
- In two seasons under Lutz, the Islanders are 12-0 when they shoot over 50 percent from the field. They are 20-1 when the opposition scores below 70 points.
 
- The Islanders rank second in the Southland Conference in NET Rankings at 194 out of 363 Division I schools (as of Dec. 18). A&M-Corpus Christi ended last season at 243.
