Energetic Crowd Pumps Up Islanders to Victory on Education Day

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In front of a lively crowd on Education Day in the Dugan Wellness Center, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program cruised to a 104-69 win over Schreiner on Friday in the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi (6-5) welcomed students from Zavala Elementary, Crockett Elementary, Gibson Elementary, Evans Elementary and West Oso Elementary for an early 11 a.m. tip. It aided the program in scoring a season-high 104 points.
 
All 12 student-athletes who saw action scored and grabbed a rebound for the Islanders, and more than half their points were scored off the bench. Senior Isaac Mushila registered a game-high 19 points, while sophomore Jordan Roberts tallied a career-high 17 points.
 
The Islanders shot a season-high .526 (10-19) from three-point range. Senior Trevian Tennyson was 4-of-7 from downtown and netted 16 points. Senior Jalen Jackson also reached double-figures with 11 points. Graduate Ross Williams dished out a career-high seven assists.


A&M-Corpus Christi led for over 37 minutes of the game. It controlled the paint where it outscored the Mountaineers 48-22. The Islanders also held a big 37-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
Schreiner was paced by Beau Cervantes who ended with 13 points and hit a trio of threes.
 
After the Mountaineers scored the first five points of the game, A&M-Corpus Christi answered with a 9-0 run which was started by a three by Roberts. The Islanders then took control with an 18-0 spurt as an and-one by Mushila made it 32-10 with 9:53 to go.
 
A three-pointer by Tennyson kept A&M-Corpus Christi ahead 48-27 with 2:55 remaining. The Islanders had a shot called off at the buzzer by freshman Jaren Marshall but still led 53-34 at the intermission.
 
A fast-break lay-up by senior Simeon Fryer had the Islanders up 67-46 with 14:44 left in the second. A 10-0 run extended it to 82-53 after a long-range shot by Tennyson at the 8:01 mark.
 
The largest lead of the day, 96-59, came after a jumper in the paint by Roberts with 4:39 left.
 
The Islanders will be back on the road Tuesday when they head to Oklahoma State for a 2 p.m. tip.
 
NOTES
- The Islanders improved to 3-0 all-time against Schreiner. It was the first meeting since Feb. 2, 2004.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is now 5-0 at home this year with each win by at least 18 points. The program is 216-106 all-time at home.
 
- The Islanders are 8-3 in the month of December under head coach Steve Lutz in two seasons. Their only losses are against Power Five schools Minnesota, Notre Dame and Arizona.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi entered the game ranked 16th in the nation in steals per game (10.2) and 17th in turnovers forced per game (18.2). The Islanders grabbed 14 steals and forced 21 turnovers.
 
- The Islanders improved to 12-0 in two seasons under Lutz when they shoot over 50 percent from the field and 20-1 when the opposition scores below 70 points.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi is now 7-0 against non-Division I opponents under Lutz.
 
- Mushila tallied his 31st career double-figure scoring game and seventh this year. He was 6-of-9 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
 
- Roberts surpassed his previous career-high of 15 points against Southwestern last year. It was his fifth career double-figure scoring outing and second this season. Roberts was 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from beyond-the-arc.
 
- Tennyson etched his 27th career double-figure scoring game and seventh this year. It was the fourth time this season he's hit at least a trio of threes in a game.
 
- Jackson submitted his 10th career double-figure scoring outing and second in the last three games. He was 5-of-6 from the field.
