A&M-Corpus Christi Travels to UTRGV for South Texas Showdown

EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will face UTRGV on Tuesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in the first of two meetings this season as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.

The South Texas Showdown is an annual rivalry series in which A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV compete against each other in 12 sports. The Islanders lead the yearly series 5-1 as an institution but trail this year 13-9 with each game counting as three points and one awarded for attendance.

A&M-Corpus Christi (2-4) is coming off a tough week in Puerto Rico, dropping to Stony Brook and Nebraska despite the Islanders outscoring Stony Brook in the first half and Nebraska in the opening quarter. The Huskers were the third Power Five opponent the Islanders have faced this season after spending opening week on the road at Texas Tech and Texas A&M.

Against the Huskers, senior Alecia Westbrook led the Islanders with 14 points for her 42nd career double figure scoring game and third of the season. Additionally, she dished out her season-high three assists and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Redshirt senior Makinna Serrata totaled 25 points in Puerto Rico, including 16 against Stony Brook where she matched her career-high of three three-pointers made. It was her 35th career double digit scoring game and third of the season. Serrata is averaging 10.2 points per game this year.

In the Southland Conference, the Islanders rank second in combined opponent rebounds (34.5 rpg) and in assists:turnover ratio (0.70). Individually, Westbrook is second in the league in rebounding average (8.0 rpg) and fifth in free throw percentage (.828).

UTRGV (2-3) has wins over Northern Colorado and fellow-Southland member McNeese. The Vaqueros have similarly faced three Power Five opponents this season, and are actually coming off consecutive losses against the Big 12 teams of Kansas and Kansas State.

The Vaqueros are led offensively by Iyana Dorsey who is averaging 12.8 points per game this season. She poured in her career-high 27 points in the win over Northern Colorado.

The game can be watched live on ESPN+, and can also be heard live for free on the Islanders Digital Network with Doug Kesterson on the call.
