Islanders Head to Puerto Rico for Fall Tournament

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will get to feel some warmer weather over its Thanksgiving Break as the team will travel to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic at the Robert Clemente Coliseum.
 
The Islanders (2-2) will face Stony Brook (2-2) on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. CT and Nebraska (3-2) at 12:30 p.m. CT. on Friday.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off an unbeaten home week, defeating both Western Colorado and Texas Lutheran. The Islanders extended their home-winning streak to 16 games, the fifth longest home-winning streak in the nation.
 
Senior Alecia Westbrook notched her 20th career double-double and second in a row, getting 17 points and 11 rebounds in the game with Western Colorado. Against Texas Lutheran, she had 14 points and 15 rebounds, one rebound shy of matching her career high.
 
Against Western Colorado, sophomore Jaeda Whitner came off the bench to score her career-high 10 points as an Islander. She was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line, another career-high. Redshirt senior Makinna Serrata scored 12 points for her second double-figure scoring game this season.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi ranks first in the Southland Conference in winning margin (+1.3), scoring defense (55.5 ppg), opponent 3-point field goal percentage (.230), rebounding margin (+3.5), and combined opponent rebounds (33.5 rpg).
 
Westbrook is second in the league in rebounding average at 8.8 per game and fifth in steals at 2.0 per game.
 
Stony Brook records wins over Manhattan and Iona. The Seawolves are led by Anastasia Warren who posts a team-high 17.8 points per game and is shooting .407 from three-point range this season. This is Stony Brook's first year in the Colonial Athletic Association conference, and the team was picked third in the Preseason Poll. 
 
Nebraska was ranked as high as No. 22 in the NCAA AP Poll this season but dropped out of the week three rankings after garnering two losses last week. Most recently, the Huskers defeated Tarleton State to improve to a winning record with the help of Alexis Markowski and Isabelle Bourne who both produced double-doubles. Markowski is averaging 15.6 point per outing, a team-high.
 
Thursday will be the first-ever meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and Stony Brook. Friday will be just the second-ever meeting between Nebraska and the Islanders and first since 2001-02 where the Huskers won 76-58.

NOTES
- The games will be the first neutral meetings this season for the Islanders. A&M-Corpus Christi has a 25-34 all-time neutral record.
 
- Nebraska will be the third Power Five opponent the Islanders will have faced this season. A&M-Corpus Christi held both Texas Tech and Texas A&M to under 70 points in the first two games of the season.
 
- The Islanders will be going for their fourth win over a Power Five program in school history and the first since 2009-10 when they beat Alabama 96-90. A&M-Corpus Christi also defeated both Indiana and West Virginia in 2004-05.
 
- The Islanders are receiving votes in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Top-25 AP Poll. They are the only team from the Southland Conference to be represented.
 
- Westbrook is now tied for second all-time in the program's career record for double-doubles with 20. The record is 29, set by Elisa Beagle (2005-10).
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has either outrebounded or tied all of its opponents this season in offensive rebounds.
 
- The Islanders are 2-0 when they score more points in the paint, more points off the bench, more second-chance points, more fastbreak points, and post a positive turnover margin.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi was picked to finish first out of ten in the SLC Preseason Poll, the first time in program history, with 11 first-place votes.
