A&M-Corpus Christi Chops Down Alcorn 98-67

EL PASO, Texas – In a fearsome performance, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program braved out an unreserved 98-67 victory over Alcorn on Wednesday at the Don Haskins Center, hosted by UTEP.

The one-sided match-up was dominated from start to finish for the Islanders (4-2), who beat an Alcorn (2-3) squad that won the SWAC regular season title last year. A&M-Corpus Christi never trailed in the game, built a 20-point halftime lead and kept its foot on the gas in the second half.

Five A&M-Corpus Christi student-athletes scored in double-figures. Graduate Ross Williams led the way with 22 points and was 6-of-9 from long-range. Senior Isaac Mushila neared a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Senior Trevian Tennyson ended with 16 points and was 4-for-6 from beyond-the-arc. Senior Terrion Murdix finished with 12 points and four assists, and senior Tyrese Nickelson came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Islanders shot a season-high .579 from the floor. Their 12 made three-pointers were also a season-high.

Alcorn, which has wins over Wichita State and Stephen F. Austin this year, was led by Devin Carter's 16 points off the bench. Shaun Walker submitted 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Islanders scored the first five points of the game on a lay-in by Murdix and a three by Mushila. Williams then found the hot hand and drilled a trio of three-pointers to increase the edge to 23-11 at the 11:45 mark.

Another field goal by Williams made it a 27-12 game midway through. A pull-up jumper by senior De'Lazarus Keys and a pair of free throws by freshman Jourdyn Grandberry upped it to 37-21 with 5:44 left. A fifth three-pointer by Williams had the Islanders up 41-24 and they kept rolling to lead 48-28 at the half.

A&M-Corpus Christi didn't let up in the second as it opened with an 11-2 run to lead 59-30 after an and-one by Murdix with 17:20 remaining. A three by Tennyson changed the score to 73-41 at the 13:25 mark.

The largest lead of the game 92-53 came with 4:16 left after a driving lay-up by sophomore Jordan Roberts. Sophomore Connor Kern and freshman Jaren Marshall netted buckets field goals late.

The Islanders will close out the tournament Friday when they face the host UTEP at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Don Haskins Center.
